Thanks to everyone who showed up and listened to our performance last night @ Level One. We really appreciate the support. I was having a hard time getting into "The Zone" and was having some technical difficulties, but on listening back to the recording, there wasn't much to worry about. While it was pretty mellow compared to our rehearsals, it didn't sound too bad. KD was doing some cool things on his wave drum. The part I am most proud of, is the fact that we actually played about 5-6 separate pieces and not just one long piece or three 15 min. pieces.

One pet peeve of mine is that when people improvise, they tend to play run-on music and don't know when to stop. It's easy to start an improvisation and go for long periods of time. The problem is it usually dilutes what the improvisation was initially about; especially if it is like this all of the time. It doesn't mean that long improvisations don't have their place, it's that you are missing a prime component of the improvisation. Time. Music happens over time(your canvas) and if you are always improvising in long forms and not changing your canvas size, you sometimes forget to get to the essential part of simply, getting to the point. I learned this from Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith. In private lessons and his ensembles, he would time improvisations. He would say something like, "We have 30 seconds left in the lesson. Lets improvise and stop." He was so good at this, that he could keep track of 30 seconds and stop very close to this point. He wasn't using meter to determine this, just his sense of "physical"(Yeah I know, time isn't physical. it´s a man made construct.) time.

MP3 music clips of various odds and ends Koorosh and Eye recorded have been put up on the "Music" page. Also, a full length track called "Building Pyramids" has been put up as well, a kind of exotic sounding track with me sounding a bit like Mick Karn. All of these came from a recording session in my living room; aka. The Urban Nerds Sanctuary.

Session was recorded on a 12" Powerbook G4 to a Fantom firewire drive, in Logic Pro 6 point something or other using a M-Audio Quattro, USB w/ the Omni preamp. Sounds pretty good, no? Edits for clips were done in Bias Peak and boy was it easy to do.

Enjoy, and please let us know what you think of the tracks...

Welcome to the Dark Numbers web page. Dark Numbers is an experimental/improvisation duo which explores the meshing of sound as much as the development of pitches and rhythms. The group consists of Koorosh Daryaie on percussion and Daren Burns on bass, both utilizing Echoplex EDP's for the duo to achieve a denser, sound-collage, and sometimes symphonic, type sound.

New website is up and running on mostly all cylinders and sound clips will be up shortly.
